2005, The American Thyroid Association, "Hyperthyroidism", Drugs known as antithyroid agents—methimazole (Tapazole®) or propylthiouracil (PTU)—may be prescribed if your doctor chooses to treat the hyperthyroidism by blocking the thyroid gland’s ability to make new thyroid hormone.
