Degrowthers insist that we must find ways of living and working that do not require our economies to endlessly expand.

In the view of degrowthers, humanity simply does not have the capacity to phase out fossil fuels and meet the ever-growing demand of rich economies.

Its reliance on anecdotes and inspirational stories invites the unflattering assessment of the book as a kind of ‘chicken-soup for the degrowther’s soul’ rather than a serious analysis of how degrowth would actually work in terms of major shifts in the economic system.

“I am not a degrowther. I think things can be greater than they have been and [that improvement]^([sic]) will come through abundance. Improvement will come through investing in healthcare, communities, and homes. It will come through thinking about immigration through a different lens. There is a world where we can have much more than we do now, but that world can only come through spending money and growth,” she said.
