Mist-belt

The mist-belt is clearly visible from a few miles outside Swakopmund, and once in the town itself, the temperature drops from desert-dry high-80's or more to damp and clinging mid-50's.

The blue swallow, which breeds in the grasslands mist-belt along the southem African eastem escarpment, is one of the world's most vulnerable avifaunal species, largely because much of its habitat has been given over to commercial forestry.

One could keep a fire alight more easily at a level above the mist-belt; one could, if necessary, survive, and bed down on bracken from these lower woodlands.
