Phytopathologically

The stem rot of the rice plant attacked by Leptosphaeria salvinii Catt. has been known to cause severe damages to the rice production in the world and that the causal fungus produces innumerous sclerotia and overwinters by them. These sclerotia are important phytopathologically, because they can infect the host tissues by germination or producing conidia.

Of course, ideally taxonomy should fit the needs of both taxonomists and non-taxonomists, and this is often possible if taxonomic decisions are made cautiously. In downy mildews, it has been possible up to now to avoid undesirable name changes for most phytopathologically important species.
