Procrastibaking

I am not suggesting that all change is for the worse. I was recently introduced to procrastibaking: a portmanteau word to describe the process of baking for the sole reason of avoiding other tasks. This seems far more like change we can believe in. Like the addition of foreign words to our language centuries ago, procrastibaking provides a word for a concept for which we did not have one previously. ¶ Our language will undoubtedly grow and change over time, but we must determine whether all change is for the better. Though neither seems like an overly productive activity, for our language's sake we need more procrastibaking and less LOLing.

"I was recently teaching a class about the signs and symptoms of stress and burnout, and asked them to think about the 'red flags' in their lives that let them know when they were feeling stressed," writes Dr Jane Clark of Armidale. "One student told me that her red flag was when she started 'procrastibaking' - cooking dozens of scones and Anzac biscuits to avoid her assignments." Simone Chin is one such procrastibaker. "It's a quite common among distracted students trying to waste time just before an exam," she writes.

We all know that feeling when you have something you REALLY need to do - but what you actually want to do is stuff your face with cake. ¶ Well, now there’s a trend for doing just that: procrastibaking. ¶ In case it’s not totally clear, procrastibaking is the art of putting more important work aside in order to bake delicious treats.
