Whiteanity

To make life more human for the oppressed and to reclaim the humanity of the oppressed as well, the racism that is built into our most cherished institutions, including our churches, must be attacked and removed “root and branch.” Without this there can be “whiteanity,” but there can be no genuine Christianity.

Is it an authentic liberation theology, or is it Christianity/Whiteanity—a religion of oppression, a species of the slave master’s Frankenstein mutation of biblical religion and Christianity that Carter G. Woodson labels mis-religion and Benjamin Mays, “compensatory beliefs”?

But the black church also operates out of a constructive cultural amnesia still clinging to remnants of the malignant forms of Christianity offered by slaveholders. This is not Christianity at all but may be what William R. Jones refers to as a creative and adaptive form of “whiteanity.”
